An essential oil is a concentrated hydrophobic liquid containing volatile aroma compounds from plants. Essential oils are also known as volatile oils, ethereal oils, aetherolea, or simply as the “oil of” the plant from which they were extracted. An oil is “essential” in the sense that it carries a distinctive scent, or essence, of the plant.
Essential Oils Are Generally Extracted By Distillation.
Pure essential oils do not go rancid, although, over time they can oxidize, which can lead to a gradual loss in aromatic quality and therapeutic value.
The longevity of essential oils can be prolonged by storing them in dark glass air tight bottles, ideally kept refrigerated or stored in a cool, dry location away from direct sunlight. It is advised that as you re-bottle essential oils into a smaller bottles when you have used a proportion from a larger bottles. The concept is that is reduces the risk of oxidation by reducing the amount of oxygen that stays in contact with the oil within the air tight bottle.
